Pesticide Safety: More Than Just Reading the Label

Gardening can be a rewarding hobby, but the pesticides and herbicides we use to control weeds, insects, and diseases deserve careful attention. While many products available to homeowners are considered safe when used correctly, improper handling and application can increase risks to people, pets, wildlife, and the environment.

Dress for the Job, Not the Weather
It's not uncommon to see a neighbor spraying weeds in flip-flops, shorts, and a tank top on a hot summer day. While it may seem harmless, this is one of the easiest ways to increase pesticide exposure through skin contact, making bare legs, feet, arms, and hands particularly vulnerable. When applying pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides, wear chemical-resistant gloves, long pants, closed-toe shoes or boots, a long-sleeved shirt, and eye protection when recommended on the label. Even products marketed as "safe" or "natural" can cause skin irritation, eye injury, or other health concerns if handled improperly. Taking a few extra minutes to dress appropriately can significantly reduce exposure.

Pay Attention to Temperature and Weather Conditions
Many gardeners focus on what they are spraying but overlook when they are spraying. Temperature, wind, and humidity can all affect pesticide performance and safety. 

Some herbicides can become more volatile during hot weather. Volatility occurs when a product evaporates after application and moves off-target, potentially damaging nearby flowers, trees, vegetables, or neighboring landscapes. This also puts the person applying herbicide at risk of inhaling these chemicals. Applying products during cooler parts of the day and following label temperature restrictions can help reduce the risk. 

Wind is another important consideration. Even a light breeze can carry spray droplets onto desirable plants, pollinator habitat, or neighboring property. Avoid spraying during windy conditions and use coarse spray droplets when appropriate to minimize drift.

Think Beyond Your Property Line
Pesticides rarely stay exactly where we intend them to. Spray drift and runoff can affect neighboring gardens, pollinator populations, pets, and local waterways. Before spraying, consider what surrounds the target area. Are there flowering plants nearby? Is a vegetable garden downwind? Could rain wash the product into a storm drain or irrigation ditch? Taking these factors into account can help prevent unintended damage in addition to maintaining good relationships with your neighbors.

Storage and Cleanup Matter Too
Safe pesticide use doesn't end when the spraying stops. Always store products in their original containers with labels intact and keep them locked away from children and pets. Never transfer pesticides into food or beverage containers. After applying pesticides, wash your hands thoroughly, clean equipment according to label recommendations, and launder work clothing separately from other household laundry. Proper cleanup can prevent accidental exposure long after the application is complete.

A Few Extra Precautions Go a Long Way
Most pesticide-related injuries and exposures are preventable. Reading and following label directions, wearing proper protective clothing, paying attention to temperature and weather conditions, and protecting pollinators can all help make gardening safer.

The next time you see someone spraying weeds in shorts and flip-flops, remember that pesticide safety isn't about looking overly cautious, it's about reducing unnecessary exposure and protecting your health while enjoying the garden.

Warm Winter? Watch for More Pests

Preparing for Pest Pressure After a Warm Winter
If your garden seems overrun with insects after a mild winter, you're likely spot-on. Mild winters, while enjoyable for us, often lead to heightened pest challenges come spring. Warmer-than-normal temperatures allow more insect pests to survive the cold season, resulting in earlier activity and potentially larger populations throughout the growing season. Typically, harsh winters act as a natural check on pest numbers. Many insects overwinter as eggs, larvae, pupae, or adults in protected spots like soil, leaf litter, plant stems, or bark crevices. Prolonged freezing kills off a portion of these populations, keeping numbers in balance. But during a warm winter, survival rates rise significantly. Pests such as aphids, mites, scale insects, caterpillars, and certain beetles can emerge sooner and in greater numbers. Warmer spring conditions accelerate their development, enabling faster reproduction and sometimes additional generations per season. For instance, experts note that milder winters reduce stress on overwintering insects, boosting spring survival and often giving pests a head start as plants green up earlier.
This dynamic also affects the predator-prey balance. Beneficial insects—like lady beetles, lacewings, and parasitic wasps—overwinter in similar garden debris, such as leaf litter or hollow stems. While many survive mild conditions too, pest populations frequently rebound quicker, creating a temporary imbalance where pests gain an advantage. Both harmful and helpful insects rely on these overwintering sites, so the key isn't total removal of debris but strategic management.
Gardeners are increasingly advised to delay heavy cleanup until spring, waiting until temperatures consistently hit around 50°F (10°C) to allow beneficials to emerge first. This protects pollinators and natural enemies while still permitting thoughtful tidying. Removing everything in fall or early spring can disrupt these helpful populations.
The best defense against elevated pest pressure is vigilant monitoring. As plants break dormancy, check regularly for insects or damage—focus on new growth and leaf undersides, where many pests congregate. Early detection makes control far easier, whether through hand-picking, water sprays, or targeted interventions before outbreaks escalate. Bolstering beneficial insects helps too. Plant diverse flowering species to supply nectar and pollen year-round, sustaining predators and parasitoids. Minimize unnecessary pesticides to preserve these allies, which naturally suppress pests. Healthy plants also fare better: ensure proper watering, sunlight, and soil nutrition so they withstand minor damage more resiliently.
A warm winter doesn't doom your garden to chaos, but it raises the odds of increased insect pressure. By staying proactive—monitoring closely, delaying cleanup thoughtfully, nurturing beneficials, and prioritizing plant health—you can manage challenges effectively while fostering a thriving, balanced ecosystem.

Butterfly Gardening

A successful butterfly garden will have several key features which create a suitable habitat for butterflies and their larva called caterpillars. The first thing to remember is to avoid using insecticides in your garden, even those considered organic. There are several good alternatives such as soap sprays and horticultural oils.

Next, be sure your garden has the proper water. Create areas where water can puddle, then add rocks in the sun so butterflies can sun and warm themselves. 

Create an easy mini pond and you'll be rewarded with other visitors that will benefit your backyard ecosystem: frogs and birds - bees, too, need water!


Last, add plants which will provide shelter and food throughout the entire season. Butterflies tend to be attracted to brightly colored fragrant flowers.
